Judgment Twenty-four hour period - Marvel doubles down on the 'Mutants are Deviants' potential gamechanger
Marvel Comics' big event story for summer 2022 will be a iii-style showdown between the Avengers, the Eternals, and the X-Men called Judgment Day. The publisher has been teasing Judgment Day for months, and hinting at a Marvel Universe and peradventure even a Marvel Cinematic Universe gamechanger
Co-ordinate to Marvel, the Eternals will be learning more than nigh their place in the universe, including a "devastating truth" about mutantkind which volition lead them to target the recently-created mutant nation of Krakoa. The hole-and-corner Marvel is referring to is, from hints given recently and years ago, that mutantkind is even more than continued to the Eternals than nosotros idea - they are, at least in the Eternals' beliefs, office of the Deviants race which are their life-long enemies.
The Eternals coming after the X-Men on Krakoa leads to an intervention from the Avengers, who hope to play mediators and stave off what Marvel calls "a potentially apocalyptic war."
In this brewing conflict, Marvel too teases a fourth force that will 'judge' the Marvel Universe. While not saying who it is, given Marvel describes this quaternary force as "the greatest power they've ever come into contact with," it would seem to be the creators of the Eternals (and pretty much every superhuman from Earth) the Celestials.
On January 28 Curiosity released three teaser-y pieces of dialogue from the story that gave some clues to the upcoming conflict between the iii groups.
All iii of the teasers feature dialogue from prominent members of each of the Avengers, X-Men, and Eternals - and according to Curiosity's press release that accompanied them, they're bodily quotes from Judgment Solar day that hint at the plot of the story.
First, Tony Stark (Iron Man) of the Avengers says, "Speaking broadly, I'm pro-hubris. But… how on Earth exercise yous think we're going to make a god in a few hours?"
Tony'southward quote may necktie back to the Avengers' electric current headquarters Avengers Mount, which is built within the husk of the fallen Celestial Progenitor fused with a literal mountain - which is a sacred site for the Eternals that they don't appreciate being co-opted by the Avengers. Could the Avengers attempt to reanimate the Celestial Progenitor?
March 9's Eternals #10 features the Eternals on a 'breaking and entering' mission into Avengers Mountain with the intent to use it to communicate with the remaining, living Celestials on how to beat out their current foe, Thanos. Perhaps it's there they'll find out the mutantkind "secret" that sets them on the warpath towards Judgment Day.
Then mutant precog Irene Adler, improve known as the recently resurrected Destiny (who is a fellow member of the Krakoan mutant leadership group, the Quiet Council), states "There will always exist war. That's one thing we tin always be sure of."
Marvel has already appear an Avengers/Ten-Men one-shot for Free Comic Book Day Although piffling details have been revealed near that book specifically, Marvel has said information technology will lay the groundwork for something that "drastically alters" the human relationship between mutantkind and the Avengers.
The mutantkind "hole-and-corner" that Marvel refers to seems to exist spelled out in the tertiary quote, from the Eternals' Druig - revealing some animosity between him (and maybe his boyfriend Eternals) and the X-Men.
Druig says ominously, "For a 1000000 years, World has been protected from the Deviants. Simply we fabricated a error… We missed some. The mutants."
If the implication of Druig's statement is literal - that mutants are Deviants - it volition have far-reaching implications for the Marvel Universe and a potentially huge affect on the MCU, we all have been speculating for years now how Marvel Studios volition innovate mutants into the Curiosity Cinematic Universe.

And Marvel merely doubled downward in the 'mutants are Deviants' dynamic. In a trailer for Judgment Twenty-four hour period released March 16 (encounter below) artwork from the series is interspersed with championship cards providing exposition.
The Eternals sequence (which begins at 0:48 and runs through 1:07) reads:
"The Eternals accept begun a brand new cycle of life ... as they continue their sworn mission ... to eliminate the Deviants ..."
And later some digital imagery suggesting estimator code existence rewritten, the title card reappears as "...to eliminate the Mutants."
Of course, in the great tradition of Curiosity superhero crossovers, the Eternals assertive mutants are Deviants could be a big misunderstanding that volition put them in conflict at the beginning merely that will be resolved when the superheroes unite confronting a true mutual foe at the end.
But the dynamic beingness real cannot be overlooked, and its potential underestimated.
Every bit for the Avengers and X-Men, they have rarely needed much of a reason to fight each other - 2012's Avengers vs. X-Men even made their rivalry the centerpiece of the Marvel Universe for a fourth dimension.
Judgment Day'south creators - Kieron Gillen, Valerio Schiti, and Marte Gracia - have a deep history with the three Marvel franchises and one some other. Gillen is writing the current Eternals ongoing series, and will soon be writing the new ongoing series Immortal X-Men. He also wrote a series delving into the backwash of the last Avengers vs. X-Men issue, called AvX: Consequences. He is also co-writing the upcoming Avengers/10-Men #one 1-shot to exist released on Free Comic Book Day 2022.
"There's a classic metaphor to describe the Marvel Universe - a toybox, which creators take toys out of, play with and put dorsum. I become information technology, simply information technology'southward never quite how I've seen it - I think 'play' in another way. I think of a music shop, with all these instruments with their different qualities suggesting different songs, different stories," Gillen says in the Feb one press release for Judgment Day.
"For all the Curiosity instruments I've played, I've never written an event. Writing an event is something different. It's not like playing an instrument. Information technology's having all the instruments in the Marvel music shop. That's non similar writing a song. That's similar writing a symphony."
Gillen also, of grade, worked with Valerio Schiti on the serial Journeying Into Mystery and went on to work with others on major Curiosity books such as Empyre, Avengers, Fantastic Four, and Inferno.
"It is great to take the opportunity to depict another Marvel outcome after Empyre," Schiti adds. "The difference is that final time I was but excited, only now I know how high the expectations are, then at present I am both excited and a bit scared! Luckily for me, I have the great Kieron Gillen and Marte Gracia watching my back and together nosotros can face whatsoever cosmic threat!"
Marvel says that the Judgment Mean solar day event volition be built upwards in upcoming bug of four ongoing serial - Eternals, X-Men, Avengers, and Immortal X-Men. But equally nosotros told you in early January, the Judgment Day build-up already began in Eternals #9.
Await for more than news on Marvel's Judgment Mean solar day here at Newsarama.
